  • Symptoms include: Abdominal pain, cough, diarrhea, fever, fatigue
  • Treatment include: Schistosomiasis is readily treated using a single oral dose of the drug praziquantel annually. There is still being research done on finding a vaccine.
  • Prevention: Prevention is best accomplished by eliminating the water-dwelling snails that are the natural reservoir of the disease.
  • Lifecycle: Schistosomes have a typical trematode vertebrate-invertebrate lifecycle, with humans being the definitive host.
  • Likelihood: A person living in Nigeria have a better chance of getting the parasite than people in the US.
